What’s that smell?

How long have you owned your piano? When was the last time it was opened and cleaned by a qualified professional, if ever? And in that vein, are you or your family suffering from allergies?

At Piano Craft, we take apart two to four pianos daily, and it never ceases to amaze our clients just how much dust, dirt, hair and sometimes even mold accumulates under the keys and in the bottom of the instrument.

Over the years we have vacuumed out unimaginable amounts of debris. Many of these are allergens, and can be unpleasant for people suffering from asthma or other allergies. We have also removed mouse and rat infestations from pianos. In addition to the above items, we also frequently find: pens, pencils, photographs, guitar picks, star stickers from music books, jewelry, coins, glitter, wax, thumbtacks, leaves and pine needles, and the occasional peanut M&Ms and potato chips. Although some of these examples sound funny, it really is important not to eat or drink near your piano. It is also important not to place plants or vases or leave burning candles on top of it.
